Itinerary

Perched on a steep hillside above Shingu, Kamikura-jinja is said to be the very place where the gods first descended to Earth. Reaching the shrine involves a short but steep climb of over 500 stone steps — but the reward is a breathtaking panoramic view over the Shingu town and the vast Kumano-nada Sea. The ancient rock “Gotobiki-iwa” at the shrine’s heart is an awe-inspiring centerpiece of spiritual folklore. In February, the shrine comes alive during the fiery Oto Matsuri, one of Japan’s most dramatic festivals.

A peaceful contrast to Kamikura, Asuka-jinja welcomes visitors with vibrant vermilion gates and tranquil forested paths. As a part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, this shrine is steeped in quiet reverence. Don’t miss the Treasure House, a small museum housing sacred relics such as ancient coins, calligraphy scrolls, and ceremonial artifacts. Sake barrels placed in tribute outside the main hall add a cultural touch.

End your journey with a scenic ride through Dorokyo Gorge, a stunning river valley where time seems to slow. Glide between towering cliffs and sculpted rocks aboard a local speedboat, as lush forested peaks reflect in the tranquil waters. It’s a soul-refreshing experience — an immersive pause in nature that contrasts and complements the spiritual landmarks earlier in the tour.

Yes, it is generally suitable for seniors. The tour is designed at a gentle pace, ideal for mature travelers seeking cultural and nature-focused experiences. However, please note that Kamikura-jinja Shrine involves a steep climb of over 500 stone steps. Guests can choose to stay at the base area if they prefer not to climb. The other sites are much easier to access.

There is moderate walking throughout the tour, primarily on flat paths. The most physically demanding part is the staircase to Kamikura-jinja Shrine. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and avoiding sandals or heels. If you have knee issues or heart conditions, please let your guide know so they can assist accordingly.

Unfortunately, this tour is not wheelchair-accessible due to uneven terrain at the shrines and the boat access at Dorokyo Gorge. If you require accessible travel options, we are happy to recommend alternative routes or customize a tour for your needs—just contact us in advance.

Lunch is not included in the standard tour package. However, there will be a stop near Shingu town or Dorokyo Gorge where you can enjoy local cuisine at your own expense. If you have dietary restrictions or prefer us to make a reservation in advance, let us know when booking.
