Itinerary

Your professional, bilingual guide will meet you right outside the cruise terminal, holding a sign with your group’s name. After a warm welcome, you’ll board a comfortable vehicle and begin your journey into Middle-earth, exploring iconic filming locations from The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Drive to Hutt Valley and River Anduin

Duration: 45 minutes

As the tour heads north into the lush Hutt Valley, your guide will point out the location used as the Anduin River in the films. This stretch of water was featured during the Fellowship’s journey by canoe. You’ll hear behind-the-scenes stories of how the cinematic magic brought these natural landscapes to life.

Scenic Stop at Helms Deep Lookout

Duration: 30 minutes

Your next stop offers panoramic views of the area used to digitally construct Helms Deep. While the fortress was largely a CGI creation, the natural surroundings are instantly recognizable. Your guide will describe how this dramatic setting contributed to one of the trilogy’s most intense battles.

Explore Rivendell and the Legolas Tree

Duration: 1 hour

Arriving at Kaitoke Regional Park, you will step into the mystical setting of Rivendell, home of the Elves. Your guide will lead you through the forest paths where scenes with Frodo, Aragorn, and Elrond were filmed. A highlight is the famous Legolas Tree, where the elf scout stood during one of his scenes. You’ll have time to walk, take photos, and imagine yourself in Tolkien’s world.

Enjoy Lunch at a Coastal Café

Duration: 1 hour

After a scenic drive back to Wellington, you’ll stop for a relaxing lunch at a cozy coastal café in the Miramar area. You can enjoy fresh local fare while taking in views of the harbor. Lunch is at your own expense unless otherwise included in your tour package.

Weta Cave and Behind-the-Scenes Tour

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Following lunch, you’ll visit the Weta Cave, home to the Weta Workshop that created many of the film’s props, costumes, and visual effects. Here, you’ll join a guided studio tour, learning directly from Weta artists about the creation of weapons, armor, and miniatures. You’ll see real props from The Lord of the Rings and other famous films.

Mt. Victoria and Outer Shire Exploration

Duration: 45 minutes

Your final sightseeing stop is Mount Victoria, where you’ll enjoy sweeping views over Wellington. You’ll walk through the woods where scenes from the Outer Shire were filmed – most notably, where Frodo and friends hide from the Black Riders. Your guide will show you exact locations and share fun trivia from the shoot.

After a magical day exploring Middle-earth, your guide will take you back to the cruise port with plenty of time to rejoin your ship. You'll return with amazing photos and a deeper appreciation for the cinematic genius behind the beloved trilogy.
