The drive offers breathtaking views of glacier-covered mountains, lush river valleys, and colorful wildflowers lining the road.

Arrival at the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve and River Rafting Experience

After approximately 40 minutes of driving, guests arrive at the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, a protected area that is home to the largest concentration of bald eagles in the world. Here, guests receive a safety briefing and are fitted with life jackets and necessary gear before boarding their comfortable, oar-powered raft.

The rafting journey down the Chilkat River is a peaceful and immersive experience, allowing guests to float silently through pristine Alaskan wilderness. Paddling is not required, as the expert guide navigates the raft, giving guests the freedom to use binoculars and cameras to observe wildlife up close.

Along the way, the guide shares fascinating information about the bald eagle population, their nesting habits, and the challenges they face in the wild. Early in the summer, guests may witness eagles feeding their young, while later in the season, hundreds of eagles gather to feast on spawning salmon in the river.

Wildlife Viewing and Nature Interpretation

As the raft glides through the preserve, guests have the opportunity to witness majestic bald eagles soaring overhead or perched in trees along the riverbanks. In addition to eagles, the area is also home to moose, bears, and a variety of other bird species, creating an exceptional wildlife viewing experience. The tranquility of the river allows guests to fully appreciate the sights and sounds of nature, offering a true escape from modern civilization.
