About this tour

Embark on an exclusive 4WD adventure to the Pohatu Reserve, stopping at breathtaking viewpoints along the way. Stand atop the crater rim at 2,100 feet and take in the stunning panoramic scenery while learning about the region’s history, ecology, and geology from your knowledgeable guide.

At Pohatu Reserve (a working sheep farm) you’ll have the rare opportunity to observe white-flippered penguins up close. This reserve is home to the largest little penguin colony on mainland New Zealand. As your guide monitors the nesting sites, you may even see penguin chicks during the breeding season and learn fascinating insights into their unique lifestyle.

Although this isn’t a dedicated birdwatching tour, the peninsula is home to a variety of native birds, as well as unique creatures like the distinctive Tree Weta insect and agile lizards. Each visit to Pohatu Reserve offers a unique experience with new discoveries.

After the tour, you’ll return to Akaroa, where you can take time to explore this charming historic town.
